For this art project, I decided to create an embroidered design. The technique I used is Norwegian Hardanger, which was taught to me by my grandmother and has been passed down through countless generations of women in my family. Since my family has always been farmers, crop breeding reminds me of their continual pursuit to improve the farm and pass it down to the next generation. (My great-grandfather once made corn shirts for everyone for Christmas when he had success with a new seed variety!) The design has a flower at the center, surrounded by four wheat stalks. To me the design represents how plant breeding brings together the best pieces of multiple varieties to create something beautiful.
